60 YEARS AGO/76: ENTER JULY

We'll use the July 3 entry to provide a preview of the July action; for this entry, we close out the June results and cover the games of Sunday, July 1, 1962.

The answer to the question "How many times did the Giants and Dodgers lose games on the same day in June?" can be gleaned from the results summary at right. The answer: it happened six times in June, on 6/7, 6/9, 6/14, 6/15, 6/20 and 6/22.

Mega-win totals (wins by 7+ runs) for June: Giants 2, Dodgers 2.

Mega-loss totals (losses by 7+ runs) for June: Giants 2, Dodgers 3.

Record vs. expansion teams in June: Giants 4-2, Dodgers 6-4.

Given that the Giants had the notable "swoon" during the month (4-12 from 6/6 through 6/22), it's a bit surprising to note that they actually lost fewer games in June (13) than the Dodgers (14).

Results from the July 1st games:

In San Francisco, Willie Mays' two-run single capped a three-run rally for the Giants in the bottom of the eighth as they came from behind to beat the Phillies (who stranded 12 runners and went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position). Final score: Giants 5, Phillies 4.

In Los Angeles, Don Drysdale struck out 13 Mets and cruised to his 14th win, backed by home runs from Ron Fairly and Frank Howard. Final score: Dodgers 5, Mets 1.

SEASON RECORDS: SFG 52-28, LAD 51-28
