60 YEARS AGO/138: HALF-GAME SEPARATION 3

The Giants and Dodgers "switched partners" on 9/10/62 (a Monday) with the Pirates moving to SF and the Cubs traveling to LA.

Both starting pitchers--Don Drysdale for the Dodgers, Billy O'Dell for the Giants--pitched strong games.

In Candlestick, Willie Mays hit his 43rd homer off Harvey Haddix in the first, a two-run shot that, as it happened, wrapped up the win for the Giants.

The only Pirate run in the game occurred in the seventh when O'Dell uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Donn Clendenon to score. Final score: Giants 4, Pirates 1.

AT Dodger Stadium, Tommy Davis hit a grand slam off Cubs lefty Dick Ellsworth to break the game open in the third inning.

Maury Wills, still blisteringly hot, had four hits, scored three runs, and stole three more bases, upping his season total to 89.

Don Drysdale pitched eight scoreless innings, striking out nine, and earned his 24th win of the year. Final score: Dodgers 8, Cubs 1.
