60 YEARS AGO/133: SEPTEMBER SHOWDOWN 3--MARICHAL WINS...BUT AT WHAT COST?

On 9/5/62 (a Wednesday), the Giants' Juan Marichal stymied his team's arch-rivals (and you know who they are...) for six innings. Nursing a balky hamstring, however, Marichal left the mound with mincing steps after unwisely racing to the first base bag to retire Willie Davis on his own.

He would not pitch again for 16 days.

Willie Mays had three hits, two of them run-scoring doubles; these RBI were the first runs that the Giants scored against Johnny Podres, who'd responded to the loss of Sandy Koufax by posting a 7-3 record with a 2.95 ERA after a slow first half.

Bobby Bolin picked up for Marichal in the seventh and blanked the Dodgers the rest of the way, though he made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, permitting LA to bring the potential tying run to the plate in the person of Ron Fairly--who grounded out. Final score: Giants 3, Dodgers 0.
