60 YEARS AGO/131: SEPTEMBER SHOWDOWN 1--GIANTS DRAW FIRST BLOOD

In the first of four games at Dodger Stadium, the Giants broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a time-honored event: a Willie Mays three-run homer.

Mays, hitting just 205 over his past twelve games, had been dropped into the #5 slot in the Giants lineup by manager Al Dark. After walking in his first at-bat, Willie hit the first pitch from Stan Williams into the left-field bleachers.  Stan did not make it through the fourth inning, as hot-hitting Felipe Alou delivered a two-out, two-run single.

Jack Sanford, staked to a 7-1 lead after four and a half innings, coasted home with his 20th win, surviving a brief Dodger rally in the bottom of the ninth. With the win, the Giants cut the Dodgers' lead to 2 1/2 games. Final score: Giants 7, Dodgers 3.
